There is a rivalry amongst two CV makers like none other. Volvo and Scania.
Both are Swedish and both make the awesomest of Buses and Trucks.
Fast forward to India and Volvo is the undisputed king.
The Big V came and changed intercity travel for the good and forever.
Fate had it for Scania to get in the hands of Volkswagen, who themselves have a bitter feel of Volvo (VW owns Scania and is one of the major shareholders in MAN)
It was a matter of time before the other Swedish company decided to take a pie off the Indian roads.
Now news is coming from VW that Scania is putting all loose ends together to start manufacturing their high end buses in India. The new setup being built near Bangalore shall also make trucks and vehicles for export.
The initial phase of 2013 will see most of these in CKD format which will gradually turn into localization of most of the components.
What we can expect from Scania buses is a direct competition to Volvo and Mercedes who have been fighting it out for the decent and growing demand for lux buses in India and exports to emerging economies (read Africa and Latin A)
Currently Scania is in terms with L&T for the import and sale of some of its tippers but it looks unlikely that L&T shall have any role in their future plans.
We eagerly wait for some more awesome machines on Indian roads to make headway into the slowly crowding market for European CV’s in India.
