Datsun is not a much known brand in India but Nissan (its parent company) is still banking on the name and has announced its India entry in the coming years.
Background : Datsun is a Jap brand brought over by Nissan in the 1930′s and positioned for the North American markets as the cool brand in its stable.
Famed for its able roadsters, the brand was discontinued in 1986
Current scenario : Nissan has had a mixed game in the last decade. Nissan itself has made a niche out of some of its cars like the GTR and Z series but struggled in the mid pack mainstay of sedans and SUV’s.
Going premium, sister brand Infiniti is finally turning some heads, thanx to better cars andĀ aggressiveĀ branding in F1 etc.
The void was left at the bottom end of the market which Maruti Suzuki caters to with perfection in India. And this is where the value lies for Datsun resurrection.
The Plan : Nissan wants to position Datsun as a entry point for emerging markets, especially India, Brazil of the lot. This will be done mainly in the way Toyota has done with Daihatsu.
Bottomline : Probably a good move some markets but not a good bet for India. Nissan has not been able to establish itself yet and another brand apart from Renault will only crowd up the space.
